Create two (2) flowcharts for one nursing activity that you use in nursing practice that involves some aspect of informatics. A few examples may be Barcode Medication administration, patient discharge process in the EMR, etc. The topic can be ANYTHING that involves informatics. Typically speaking, there should be at least 8-10 steps in flowchart of this type for the “current state”.
The first flowchart will document “current state”. What that means is, you will capture what is being done at this moment in practice. You can glean this information from your institutions policy and procedure, your own practice, or watching a colleague perform the activity.
Current state: in my clinical practice for charting implants. There are implants that you can scan or retrieve implant when you enter the reference number. For one time used implant- we scan and the item pops up but missing lot #, Sn#, expiration dates or any pertinent information about the implant so we have to enter those. It is time consuming most especially when you have multiple implants.
The second flowchart will document a proposed “future state”. Use the resources from the course or your own creative ingenuity, and create a novel way to perform the nursing activity that in some way enhances the process. For example, think about quality improvement . . . it could be using LEAN principles to remove unnecessary “waste” in the process to make it more efficient. Think about patient safety, what workarounds exist for your current process that could be eliminated in your future state. (These are just ideas . . . be creative!)
For one time implant- once one time implant is used, all information needed for charting will be prefilled. The good thing about is the nurse can be more engaged during procedure and focuses care on the patient.
2. Provide a summary of the two workflow diagrams. (The summary can be a video of 90 seconds or less or a written document).
Compare and contrast the two processes. What does the future state offer that the current state lacked?
The summary describes the elements above. Include references to support your changes. Be sure to include a reference list in APA format for the references you state verbally. OR
The summary can be a written document of 1 page or less, using APA format and appropriate references and reference page.
At least 3 references (2016-2021) are needed for the assignment and must meet APA guidelines. The references should support the workflow change process.
This exercise is worth 15% and will be submitted in Canvas.
In total, you will submit three assets – Two (2) workflow diagrams and 1 Summary (written) with a Reference page.
