Democracy comes from the Greek words “demos,” which translates to “the people,” and “kratia,” which translates to “power,” essentially meaning “power to the people.” A healthy democracy, therefore, requires two things: first, that the people do use their power (political engagement), and second, that the people know how to use that power (political knowledge). Evaluate the health of American democracy by these two democratic standards. In other words, are Americans democratically competent? Characterize AND analyze the levels of (A – 15 points) political engagement AND (B – 15 points) political knowledge of Americans. In your answer, explain what characterizes American political engagement and political knowledge (I showed you so much Political Science work on these points!) and the factors that affect such characterizations. Don’t forget your overall diagnosis of the health of American democracy in these 2 regards.
