The Case:
In 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump started to impose tariffs and other types of trade barriers on the People’s Republic of China. Trump claimed that China had been unfairly benefitting from trade practices for a long time and it was now the right time to put an end to this injustice. For Trump, the World Trade Organization had proven to be an incompetent actor, which failed to resolve these issues in a multilateral fashion. He, therefore, wanted to take control of the situation and initiate these tariffs unilaterally.
Trump particularly focused on the problem of trade deficit when initiating this war. He accused Chinese officials of manipulating their currency, which results in a trade deficit for the US. He also underlined other unfair practices such as infringement of intellectual property rights by the Chinese companies and lack of fair access to the US-based companies in the Chinese market.
The trade war had a negative impact on both economies. It caused higher manufacturing costs for the US companies and led to higher prices for the US customers. It also caused a slowdown for the Chinese economy. It also hurt the direct foreign investments in China since some American companies moved their supply chains to other nations such as Vietnam. Yet the trade war was also beneficial for the global community since it gave warning to the Chinese officials to stop regulating their currency, infringing on intellectual property rights, and allowing the US companies to have an easier access in the Chinese economy.
