There is a homeless man who has no family at all. He sleeps on the sidewalk right outside a major hospital. Inside the intensive care unit within this hospital, there are 3 world famous doctors who have collectively found the cure for cancer. But there is a serious problem: Each of them needs a life-saving organ in the next 1 hour or they will die. There are no organs available from the donor pools. Each doctor needs a different organ. If they die, then the cure for cancer will die with them, and then millions of people will continue to die from cancer each year world-wide. Or, the hospital staff, can walk 20 feet out of the hospital and forcefully abduct the homeless man who has absolutely no social utility and harvest his organs and save the 3 doctors with his organs. The homeless man will die from this procedure, but we can guarantee the survival of the 3 doctors who know the cure for cancer. What do you think? Should the hospital staff harvest the homeless man’s organs and save the 3 doctors, or should they not do this and allow the doctors to die? Why are why not?
