You have been chosen by the chief to spearhead the implementation of a Wellness program for your
agency, where there had previously been none. The chief believes this is an important aspect of
supporting the physical and emotional well-being of all employees.
News of the initiative has leaked to officers who have responded with rumor and innuendo that
such a program will expose officers’ mental health files to command. Others, mostly younger
officers, think it’s a great idea but are reluctant to speak up. The chief wants you to make a case to
officers that the training holds considerable value for not only the agency but all employees and the
community. He is concerned some influential employees will spread malicious rumors and
disinformation about the basis and reasoning for the program, which indeed, is happening.
Keeping in mind your myriad audiences and your department’s culture, prepare your
communications plan to present to the chief. Think strategically about your different internal
audiences, and clearly communicate your goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics to address the issue
and your audiences’ concerns. Include metrics that will help analyze the success of your plan.
