AP0507: Principles of Cellular and Biomolecular Analysis |
Learning Outcomes:-
-
- To understand the operating principles of a range of illustrative molecular separation technologies, spectrometric technologies, and selective technologies and their application in bioscience analyses.
- To understand the methodologies and precautions necessary to use cultured cells in research and diagnosis.
- To competently and professionally generate, record, analyze, describe, interpret and compare analytical data sets.
- To recognize the variety of approaches available to secure an analytical outcome and to recognize the role of a gold standard test and how to evaluate a replacement.
This assessment is designed to improve your report writing skills. There is a strong focus on your manipulation and presentation of experimental data using figures as well as evaluating data quality and presenting a balanced interpretation of the data. All of the sessions in the first half of the module are important for maximizing your performance in this assessment.
The early lectures in the series cover cell culture, the theoretical basis for immuno-detection including ELISA, enzyme assay, and data handling. The practical sessions are particularly important. The cell culture and ELISA practicals are critical to generating the data for your report. There is also a focussed report writing session that will describe the composition of a lab report and give you direction towards performing well in this assessment.
In order to make sure you can use literature effectively and avoid academic misconduct, there are focussed workshop sessions on finding and selecting good articles, the use of Endnote referencing software, and on avoiding academic misconduct in general. As well as forming the majority of the assessment score directly the skills you will develop in using references will be critical for your ongoing development and for success in assessments in almost all modules going forward.
