A reflection is a personal essay with an argument. Evidence for the argument may be taken from an experience and/or a reading assignment. A reflection paper is neither a reaction paper nor a book review. The purpose is to think deeply and carefully about an experience or text, and analyze how that experience or text has/has not changed your thinking and/or practice. I would like to see integration between the new ideas you are learning and experiences with previously held ideas, application of what you learned, and critique reflecting what you’ve learned from lectures and other reading assignments. A reflection paper does not focus on summary or quotes, but on how the readings or experience challenge or cause you to reevaluate your beliefs.

A reflection paper should be an essay, not a list of answers to questions. Reflection does not mean stream of consciousness.

There are two common types of reflection papers those focused on experience and practice and those focused on academic readings and ideas. This paper will integrate both your experience and the course material. You will write your paper from a personal voice perspective.

The primary purpose of the reflection papers is to explore your understanding of the material covered in the course thus far and to apply the ideas learned to your real-world experiences.

  • ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:
  • This assignment requires that you write a structured reflection paper. Students are to use their own discretion regarding how much to share in their reflection papers. You have the right to reveal only what you wish to share. The reflection papers are kept confidential and will only be read by the instructor.
  • Reflection papers will count towards 7% of the final course grade, the paper is worth 7 points each. The papers are to be 1-2 double spaced pages in length, no longer than three pages. Papers must be submitted on time on Blackboard using the Turnitin link in your assignments folder (I will not accept emailed papers). One (1) point will be deducted for each day the paper is late.
  • Your reflection paper will discuss one or two of the topics provided below.
  • DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING YOUR REFLECTION PAPER:
  • You will choose ONE of the below questions AND choose 1 or 2 topics from the list, no more than 2 topics to discuss for your reflection paper 1-2 pages. Use the rubric categories’ (see below) to structure your paper to earn full credit.
  • A reflection paper is a personal essay, kind of like a structured journal entry, you are writing about yourself, and your family experiences informed by the theory/concepts in the textbook.  There should be no textbook quotes, you may choose to define the topic you choose by writing 2-3 sentences at the start of your reflection, otherwise no quotes or textbook language is used.

You are choosing 1 or 2 topics from the list and 1 question to answer.

You are using your personal experiences to answer the question you choose.  The description of the topic you are writing about must be accurate and match the textbook information. i.e. “My family displays patterns of interactions that are Differentiated.  My grandmother and I are always arguing with each other, we never get along, but we are strong individuals who know what we want and won’t let anyone take advantage of us”.  This is an inaccurate description of Differentiation of self, points will be deducted.  I am looking for personal reflection and not a research paper, or lengthy descriptions or discussion of terms.  Also, if you choose one of the questions that criticize a topic, ensure that you have read the textbook information thoroughly on the topic, so that you are not arguing a point that is already addressed in your textbook, as this will result in point deductions.

Example question and topic:

– Question 2:  Has any of the topics made you change your thinking in any way? Does it provide information that changes the way you will deal with people or situations going forward?    Tell how your thinking or behavior will change and why. Be specific in your answer.

-Topic: Identified patient.

You will define the identified patient, based on your textbook information. Then you will answer the question. 

“The topic of Identified patient is defined as …………………… Before learning about the topic, I often blamed my brother for causing the conflict and stress in my family (give specific examples).  However, now I understand that his role and function in the family was………….  My family treats him as if……….(specific examples).  Learning about the topic has taught me to……………….  I now see my brother’s role as…………. and I feel……………….towards him now.”  Here you will describe in detail how your thinking has changed and how you will change the way you interact with your brother.  Providing examples, descriptions, and specific ways your thinking and behavior will change.

  1. Has any of the topics challenged or have been in opposition to you, theologically, culturally, or socially? What specifically is in opposition or, disturbs you, or draws your attention? Describe what ideal you hold and how the topic has challenged or opposed the ideal.
  2. Has any of the topics made you change your thinking in any way? Does it provide information that changes the way you will deal with people or situations going forward? Tell how your thinking or behavior will change and why. Be specific in your answer.
  3. Is there any important fact, idea, question, or issue that you think needs to be considered related to the topics? Is something left unanswered or ambiguous? Do you find that the topic does not fully address an issue or the resolution of an issue? Did the authors leave anything out that you consider important? What is the issue and what information is lacking?
  4. Is there a topic that you want to criticize or disagree with? Does anything make you uncomfortable? Tell me in detail which topic you are discussing and what about that topic you disagree with or makes you uncomfortable. Provide a compelling argument for you point of view.
  5. Do any of the topics connect with other readings, lectures, or experiences you’ve had? How would you integrate these ideas or facts with what you already know or think about this subject? How could you apply what you experienced or learned to your existing schema (knowledge base)?
  6. Is there anything in your past experience, cultural or ethnic background, or identity that resonates with or supports what you learned about the topics? Tell me in detail how what you learned about the topics resonates with you.
