Do (week 7): Beyond the Binary: Muxes This week we talked about… Do (week 7): Beyond the Binary: Muxes This week we talked about gender and sexuality, masculinity and femininity, and went “beyond the binary” to explore genders that are neither strictly male nor female. For this post, please watch the short film (~10 mins long) on Muxes — linked in this module or here: Recommended viewing: MUXES — and reflect on the following prompt:In the film, we get to see and hear the voices of many people who identify as Muxes in Oaxaca, Mexico. Who is a Muxe, and how is their gender understood in this context? In terms of a gender ideology, what are the broadly understood characteristics of a Muxe? How do they perform being a Muxe? Are they accepted, socially? How do they fit into local customs and the Zapotec language? More broadly, what are your impressions of this short film as it depicts Muxe lives? Are there other non-binary genders that you’re aware of and interested in? Thank you! Social Science Sociology ANTH 2
