When setting up new branch offices in key locations within the United States there are several things to answer to successfully set up an organization that will thrive. Some of these aspects are strategic location, local governing laws/regulations, the technology required, and most important human capital. A good human resource manager will be sure to seek out employees that possess the proper competencies, knowledge, and skills required to ensure that the organization is successful. This may be overwhelming due to the lack of talent applying for open positions.
First, I would ask for clarification on how many employees we will hire per department and the skills required by each applicant to successfully carry out the required work. As mentioned in our reading regarding the four types of organizational assets, “human assets are the “glue” that holds all the other parts together to achieve results” (Jackson, 2020,2017, p. 10). Putting the correct employees in place will help navigate the company to success by guaranteeing that the person has the proper education, training, and experience to do the job. The number of employees may be used by looking at the current facilities personnel and gauging if the same workforce will be required in each location we are constructing.
The second question I would clarify is timing. Timing is important so that each milestone is hit, and that the organization stays on track when setting up a new location. This will require strategic planning from all departments to make sure all employees and staff help achieve the business goals associated with the setting up of the four locations. Communication is key during this discussion and future discussions to ensure everyone is on track to meet the deadline. Making sure you understand the timing of each opening will help you better plan and have all employees in place.
Cost is the last part of the equation I want to understand. I can take some of the information from the first question (number of employees) and do my research in each location to understand the compensation for each position. This will be based on the full human resource scope as well as other variables such as advertising for open positions, possible relocation, etc. Understanding the cost will also help the company understand the financial impact of opening each location. People-related costs are usually the most controllable expense to a company and can impact the livelihood of the organization (Jackson, p. 50).
These three areas are the first things as a human resource manager that I would like to inquire about and understand in the first meeting regarding the new facilities. There are several other things to consider, but from the human capital side, I believe these three areas are key indications of how to proceed forward with the hiring process. Making sure that you are setting up the correct foundation and leading by example will influence others in your organization. As mentioned in Corinthians, “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon” (King James Bible Online, 2022).
