Journal topic: Positive guidance policy
What did I observe the supervising teacher doing in relation to the journal topic? Why is it
important in context of what I have observed?
The educators in the room are very understanding of the children’s behavioral and emotional cues.
They effectively teach them how to cope with challenging emotions such that of temper tantrums,
taking turns, not listening, running in the room, and sharing by positively guiding them to do the
behavior acceptable to the situation.
They used positive guidance strategies such as offering alternatives when children fight over toys.
Instead of saying “no” they tell them to “use their walking feet” when running inside the room, that
“sand stays inside the sandpit” when attempting to throw it outside and say “let’s try shaking the
musical instruments” when children shake the gate.
The implementation of positive guidance strategies in the classroom is important to encourage
children to direct themselves towards a positive alternative in a challenging situation. Likewise
important as they learn to regulate their emotions when forbidden to do something they want by
using language that is positive and clear to the child thereby teaching children to set limits to their
behaviour.
What could I use or learn from what I have observed? How can I apply the new knowledge along
with understanding from the journal topic reading?
I have learned that there is a positive alternative to saying no to a child that makes them feel
understood and not deprived to explore.
Moving forward, I will be using positive disciplining to children to encourage positive behavior and
acceptable manner while ensuring they are supported and cared.
