In the text “A Comprehensive Guide to Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities,” there are various social policies discussed. Social policies improve the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their well-being. Social policies also refer to how communities respond to these challenges. One of the social policies discussed in the text is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) prevents discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities based on employment, state and local government, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications (Wehmeyer et al., 2017).

Impact

The purpose of the ADA is to be sure individuals with disabilities are given equal opportunities as those without a disability. Due to the ADA and a host of other social policies, many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are no longer denied education, employment, and making public places accessible to all (Wehmeyer et al., 2017).

Improvements

Although the law grants individuals with disabilities to no longer be denied education, employment, and access to public places, it is not strictly enforced. The law should completely prevent discrimination against those with disabilities, accompanied by mandatory “check-ins” to be sure the law is being adhered to.
