Explanation: Effective advocates understand the strength and weakness of using survey research as an advocacy tool. This assignment will require the student to focus on one weakness of survey research and/or survey results that could undermine a lobbying effort. It is considered a short assignment.
Assignment Requirements:
1. Chose a survey that may contain a methodological flaw, or two polls generally taken at the same time, which yield opposite results (You can use a survey or surveys on public policy issues from 2018 or later).
2. Research and explain why the flaw is important and how you would use the flaw to discredit the research or leverage to discredit the public policy agenda it is being used to advance.
Result of exercise: You will often see public opinion surveys used to advance public policy. Sometimes pools or surveys are ‘contrived’ and have fundamental flaws or just don’t seem to fit reality. Great lobbyists have a familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses of polling research, and this will give you valuable insights.
