Determining if a theory is suitable for research is crucial in the scientific process. One should consider the relevance, applicability, and support of a theory. To make a useful contribution in studies, a theory must demonstrate good conceptual clarity alongside high testability potential and accessibility to related techniques (Damschroder, et al., 2022). Researchers should examine whether the approach fosters well-grounded hypothesis generation, experiment design, or inquiry.
For the theory to align with research objectives and questions is also essential. A good idea should present a conceptual framework to successfully direct data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Present a coherent and logically sound argument that is resilient against rigorous scrutiny. The track record of empirical validation or its potential for new insights is key when considering the adaptability of a theory.
Internal and external criticism are necessary to evaluate middle-range theories in social science research. Internal criticism targets the hypothetical and logical elements of a middle-range theory (George, et al., 2019). When testing a theory against internal consistency, coherence and clarity is essential. Scholars evaluate if the underlying concepts of the theory logically come together, aligning with experimental observations. In addition, they examine the ability of the theory to generate ideas that can be tested. Thoughtfully reflecting on a theory includes assessing its definition and conceptual structure.
When assessing a middle-range theory, external criticism is focused on its validation in real world contexts. Research on whether an approach has been empirically tested or validated should be assessed in its entirety (Edgell, 2023). Researchers study the quality and quantity of evidence related to a theory, paying attention to method robustness and result generalizability. Furthermore, external scrutiny assesses the practical application of a theory and evaluates its success in explaining or foreseeing further happenings outside its pioneer context.
