Nearly everyone has been part of a team during the course of their lives. Some of these team experiences may have been positive, some perhaps negative, and some neutral to the point that they are barely memorable. By working together with a team, you are offered unique opportunities for growth as other members will challenge your assumptions and present different perspectives. Think of your experiences being in teams. Which ones stand out as being most memorable?

In this Discussion, you will dissect the characteristics of a positive experience with a team. Then, you will use this analysis to develop clear takeaways for your own development as a team leader and manager.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Think about the best team experience you have ever had. This may be a work team, an athletic team, a volunteer team, or any other positive team experience.

Post an analysis of managerial practices that promote effective, positive, and inclusive teams. In your analysis, do the following:

· Describe your best team experience and explain what made it so.

· Identify at least three factors that contributed to the positive culture, inclusivity, and engagement of that team. Provide at least one specific example for each factor.

· Then, identify two specific practices you could use as a manager to ensure your teams are effective, positive, and inclusive.

· Be sure to use the Learning Resources to support your analysis.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Best Team Experience

  • Think of a meaningful team you were a part of—this could be from work, school, sports, or volunteer projects.

  • Ask yourself:

    • What made this team experience stand out?

    • What emotions or lessons do you associate with it?

    • How did the team communicate and solve problems?

Step 2: Describe the Team Experience (1 Paragraph)

  • Start with a clear description of the team: the setting, your role, and the goals.

  • Explain what made this a positive experience—was it teamwork, leadership, communication, or something else?

  • Example:

Step 3: Identify Three Key Factors That Contributed to Team Success

For each of the three factors, include:

  • The factor name

  • A short explanation

  • A real example from your team experience

Use this structure:
Factor 1: Open Communication

We regularly held short team huddles where everyone could voice concerns and offer ideas.

Factor 2: Shared Vision

We all understood our goal—to serve 500 families a week—and worked toward it with dedication.

Step 4: Apply Lessons to Your Future as a Manager (1–2 Paragraphs)

  • Identify two practices you would apply as a manager.

  • Be specific and explain how they promote inclusivity, engagement, and effectiveness.

  • Use Learning Resources to back up your points.

Example:

“As a manager, I would establish regular check-ins that prioritize team input, aligning with Kotter’s change model which stresses communication during transformation.”


Step 5: Support with Learning Resources

Use at least one or two course materials or credible sources to strengthen your analysis. These might include:

  • Concepts of team dynamics

  • Inclusive leadership strategies

  • Engagement theory
