NRNP 6531 Week 1: The Role of AI in Advancing Nursing Practice Competencies

NRNP 6531 Week 1: The Role of AI in Advancing Nursing Practice Competencies

Advanced practice nurses require multidimensional competencies to deliver safe, effective, and efficient care. Prudent integration of artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance competencies like patient assessment and interprofessional collaboration. In a review of the potential of AI in revolutionizing healthcare, Alowais et al. (2023) observed that AI algorithms and tools can analyze patient data to help clinicians triage patients, assess the cause of illness, and prioritize high-risk cases. Other applications that enhance the nurse’s patient assessment competency include the use of AI-enabled machines and decision systems to question patients and provide real-time suggestions that aid diagnoses. AI enhances interprofessional collaboration competencies by fostering a climate of teamwork and shared responsibility in healthcare settings (Ta’an et al., 2025). Such a climate is essential for the effective application of AI, which necessitates a work culture where nurses, leaders, and nurse informaticists collaborate to enhance efficiency through tech-driven practice.  AI could impact my ability to perform at a higher level in patient assessment and interprofessional collaboration through tools and methods that ensure more productivity, accuracy, and time-saving procedures when delivering optimal patient care. Challenges include data security concerns, regulation, care providers’ resistance, and system interoperability issues.

Potential ethical challenges associated with AI use in healthcare include a lack of compassionate care, data ethics, and algorithm bias. AI hampers compassionate care by minimizing the human touch that characterizes physical encounters between patients and care providers. Data ethics relate to informed consent, data ownership, and privacy (Jiang et al., 2021). Increased adoption of AI may deny patients the right to know who uses their data, for which purpose, and how it is used. Jiang et al. (2021) further identified bias in data sources as a typical ethical issue when using AI. Since existing data helps to develop AI programs, algorithm bias is possible, leading to false-positive results. Such bias may classify patients unfairly, causing wrong treatment or unfair distribution of medical resources.

AI contributes to improved patient outcomes significantly. As Alwais et al. (2023) mentioned, AI improves diagnosis, leading to more accurate treatment. Such treatment reduces readmissions and hospitalizations and prevents extended stays in hospitals. The predictive capacity of AI also helps clinicians to identify and address patient concerns through early interventions. According to Green et al. (2024), AI can assess multifaceted social and environmental factors of health disparities. This assessment is possible through AI tools, which have the potential to analyze large data sets and identify consistent patterns regarding social determinants of health (SDOH). Data-driven measures for addressing SDOH reduce health disparities through solutions that improve access to care and empower populations to live healthily.

Reflections and the content in this course may help to refine my competencies by increasing my knowledge of technology applications in patient care. Part of this help includes resources and topic areas exploring the use of various tools and technologies and how advanced practice nurses can use them to optimize patient outcomes. Reflections and content will also support my career goals in a technology-driven healthcare environment by preparing me to provide competent care in such environments while developing relevant skills over time. A critical part of this competent care is adherence to ethical standards that guide technology use, accurate use of technologies, and using technologies to augment and not replace in-person care.

NRNP 6531 Week 1: The Role of AI in Advancing Nursing Practice Competencies

The Role of AI in Advancing Nursing Practice Competencies

As advanced practice nurses, you will play a vital role in collaborating with patients, families, and healthcare teams to deliver safe, ethical, and effective care. Core competencies have been developed to guide the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to succeed in this role, from clinical decision making to patient education and interprofessional collaboration.

At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare by improving diagnostics, streamlining administrative tasks, and enhancing patient care. As technology continues to evolve, integrating AI into your clinical practice and understanding its impact on your competencies will be essential for future ready, evidence-based care.

In this discussion, you will reflect on how AI can influence and enhance advanced nursing practice competencies and consider how this course may support your professional development and long-term career goals.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, with a focus on advanced nursing practice competencies and the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.
  • Consider how AI tools and technologies are shaping the way nurse practitioners deliver care and how this aligns with your professional goals.

By Day 3

Post a response that addresses the following:

  • Reflect on specific advanced practice competencies (such as patient assessment, evidence-based practice, or interprofessional collaboration) and discuss how AI tools and technologies could enhance these competencies. How might AI impact your ability to perform at a higher level in these areas? Consider both the potential benefits and the challenges that could come with integrating AI into practice.
  • Identify potential ethical challenges associated with the use of AI in healthcare.
  • Discuss how AI may contribute to improved patient outcomes. How might AI help reduce healthcare disparities, such as improving access to care in underserved communities?
  • Consider how your reflections and the content in this course may help you refine your competencies and support your career goals in a technology driven healthcare environment.

Support your response with at least three current, credible scholarly sources (published within the last 5 years). Please note that the course text is not considered a scholarly reference.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days. Offer thoughtful insights or suggest resources that may help further explore AI’s role in enhancing competencies or addressing healthcare challenges. Support your responses with evidence from the literature.
