LIBR1085 Information Provision 1 Topic – Reflective Writing and Practice We all love to tell a good story. The ability to tell stories is one of the attributes that makes us human. In telling stories, we recount what happens to us, try to put into perspective the events of our lives and attempt to make sense and learn. One of the main skills in storying is to learn to reflect, to not only describe but to think critically, and then to be able to change. This skill of reflection is an important skill which underpins your work practice and your continuing professional development. The aim of reflective practice and writing is to develop an action cycle where this reflection leads to some kind of change or improvement or the seeking of alternative answers. Reflective Practice Reflective practice is a process by which you: stop and think about your practice, consciously analyse your decision making and draw on theory and relate it to what you do in practice. Critical analysis and evaluation refocuses your thinking on your existing knowledge and helps generate new knowledge and ideas. As a result, you may modify your actions, behaviour, treatments and learning needs. (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, http://www.csp.org.uk/faqs/cpd/what-reflective-practice-how-do-i-do-it) Reflective Writing Reflective writing is one aspect of professional practice. It is a skill that needs to be learnt and practiced. See the following definition of the skills of reflective writing Reflective writing is: Your response to experiences, opinion events or new information;Your response to thoughts and feelings;A way of thinking to explore your learning; An opportunity to gain self-knowledge;A way to achieve clarity and better understanding of what you are learning;A chance to develop and reinforce writing skills;A way of making meaning out of what you study. (https://student.unsw.edu.au.what-reflective-writing You can practice reflective writing by thinking about what you have learnt after each tutorial or lecture and writing down some responses. Thinking about your gaps in knowledge and how you could deal with those gaps is the next step. Examples of reflective writing CommentHow to make it a reflective commentGroup Work The group started out well but some members did not finish the agreed tasks on time. So we had to scramble at the end It was hard to find the resources that we needed and group members often overlapped with their choices My contributions to the group were; Provided 10 of the resources Communicated with members Wrote the introductionThis is a descriptive sentence. Add what did you do about the problems or what would you do in the future in group work? What problems did you identify with the way that the group was managed/ How would you do this differently in the future. Again the list is just what you did rather than a reflection of the tasks.Individual Work I researched and wrote the report using the resources that I found through Proquest and Informit. How did you search? What did you learn about searching? Did you use a trial and error approach to composing the search terms for your study? How would you go about this task in the future? Why did you choose these databases? Style of writing Reflective writing is mostly subjective. It is often personal, critical and can also be creative. It includes some description (who what when) and analysis (how what why?) and can often result in more questions.
