In this module you will learnabout the principles of competitive strategic advantage and data. It wouldbe diÞcult to underestimate the power of data and how it has become acore driver of innovation in the ‘data economy’. Many countries are raisingconcerns about privacy and information security in light of how powerfuldata has become with data and data analytics now producing ‘products’ that4/7/2021 Laureate International Universitieshttps://laureate-au.blackboard.com/webapps/blackboard/content/listContent.jsp?course_id=_110514_1&content_id=_9784285_1&mode=reset 2/6organisations can sell based on user activity on their platform. Discussionsabout ethics are emerging in response to data science and artiÕcialintelligence which depend on data to progress organisation’s interests(Parliament of Australia, n.d.). While legislators are responding to this newemerging economic force, organisations must compete with dominanttechnology companies. As an example of how data is inÖuencing strategy, NetÖix has emerged as aleader in the virtualization of the ‘the video store’ in their battle againstbricks and mortar competitor, Blockbuster (Parker, Van Alstyne & Choudary,2016. P.63). Some of this success has been attributed to the distributioneconomics of a large platform and their capability to stream rather thancirculate physical copies of movies which were eàectively ‘dead stock’ whilethey were in the mail or waiting to be returned. NetÖix were able tocapitalise on data to determine viewer preferences and oàer them more ofwhat they enjoyed (Parker et al., p163). However now that NetÖix hasvanquished the video store, what is next? In making series’ like ‘The Crown’,‘Orange is the new black’ and ‘Stranger things’, NetÖix has stepped out of itsoriginal Õeld of strategic competition and is changing the rules of play bychallenging broadcasters like NBC, ABC and HBO (Parker et al. p204). Thequestion here is: ‘Does NetÖix and their platform have suÞcient competitiveadvantage to take on new competitors in their own territory based on theirplatform advantage?’What happens when a competitor with a mega value chain makes theinvestment in a platform to distribute their mega library of content? Whathappens when the competitor has such a well-developed value chain withblockbuster franchises that NetÖix’s investment in original content pales incomparison? We are on the verge of Õnding out with the recent release ofDisney+.Consumers may debate whether NetÖix or Disney+ will win the streamingwars based on content, and the war between old media and new media ishotly contested with a sense that old media has been on the losing end ofthe platform wars.
