Corporate Governance & Ethics (ACCT19083) Assignment 01. Central Queensland University Lecturer: Gerard Ilott Student Name: Outline for the body of the report you are planning for your Written Assignment (Assessment 2). Has Collingwood Football Club demonstrated good corporate governance? Introduction The Collingwood Football Club was established in 1892 in the land of the Kulin Nation when Melbourne was heavily racially segregated. Most of its players and staff were drawn from the working class, where its leadership speaks for itself as a club that has been based in a historically disadvantaged and diverse place, with a tradition of promoting underdogs. Although the club speaks to inclusion and anti-racism, it has been linked to a number of high-profile racist incidents, showing that there are a number of challenges related to the organization’s corporate governance since there is a gap between what the sporting club says it stands for and what really happens. The following report will thus focus on the implementation of corporate governance within the Football club, analyzing its corporate governance practice under the following outline: 1.0 Introduction – This section will provide an introduction to the topic of corporate governance. It will also give a summary of the case study paper. 2.0 Background – This will be the second section of the case study report. In the background section, the research will discuss the corporate governance measures that have been implemented by the football club. The section will also discuss the club’s corporate governance and its impact on the organization’s leadership, how corporate governance enables the organization to conduct its business in an ethical manner, and how the organization ensures a safe work environment in support of its staff and players (Cannon & Biersteker, 2020). 3.0 Corporate Governance issue at Collingwood football club – This section of the paper will discuss in detail the corporate governance issues that the club is currently facing. It will look at the way football players and staff have been selected in the club, how they have been able to respond to allegations of racism in its leadership, and the selection of staff (Addink, 2019). Also, in this section, it will be essential to discuss the various core values that the football club stands for as proof that it has taken measures to ensure proper corporate governance practices. The section will also discuss initiatives taken by Collingwood football club as proof of workplace diversity which is a powerful component of corporate governance practices (Addink, 2019). Also, it will be essential to check on what the sporting club has been able to achieve so far in regards to corporate governance. 4.0 Corporate governance practices – in this section, the assignment will discuss the principle of transparency in corporate governance and how it relates to the sporting club’s actions. The section will look at whether there has been appropriate support provided by the club in regards to allegations of racism and how it ensures that there is inclusion of the cultural diversity of all players, the staff, and club ownership (“roadmap for accession: Review against core corporate governance principles,” 2018). Also, the section will look at some of the significant policy changes that the sporting club needs to adapt to establish a corporate governance system; this will also include processes that should be stopped and the changes that the club will require to put in place to ensure that it improves its response to racism in future. 5.0 Discussion – This section compares various corporate governance practices among organizations to determine what can work for Collingwood Football Club in support of the principle of transparency. 6.0 Conclusion – This will be the last section of the paper and will provide a summary of what has been discussed, including the way forward for the organization.
