Submission format and arrangements Your work, which MUST be a WORD document should be submitted via Blackboard Learn by 10.00 pm on the Friday of week 8 (19th March 2020). When you upload your submission to Blackboard Learn, it will automatically be submitted to Turnitin and you will be required to confirm that it is your own work. Your submission MUST include the assessment matrix from Appendix 1 below. Please note that the assessment matrix requires landscape orientation. If you are unsure how to mix portrait and landscape on one document, please refer to Appendix 2 below.  Your coursework document should be saved with a filename using your name (surname first) and student number, followed by a brief description – eg Bloggs Joe B00123456 AMA Task 1. This is simply so that when I save submissions on my computer, they will automatically be sorted into alphabetical order by surname. The weekly study plan indicates that week 6 has been identified as a ‘reading week’. This provides an excellent opportunity to use time to complete the reading required to complete the coursework task. However, it is strongly recommended that you create opportunities to gather material before week 6, so that you can use the week 6 to prepare your first draft. That may well give rise to questions that can be dealt with in the live session in week 7, prior to submitting your final draft in week 8.   Assessment Your work will be assessed using the Level 6 assessment criteria for qualitative based work amended to delete all uses of ‘bibliography’. The amended assessment criteria are at Appendix 1 below, and are also in the modue handbook. A mark of zero will be given for this element of assessment if your work is either not submitted or is submitted late, except in extenuating circumstances (details of extenuating circumstances are given in the Accounting Student Handbook). Note forward for 20/21 – refer to roles within the Accounting profession, as opposed to specific titles Context A widely held view of “accounting” is that it is about financial reporting and compliance. While those are extremely important aspects of accounting, they are not the sole focus of a professional accountant. Moreover, they relate to the past. Successful organisations invariably focus on the future. There is a significant body of opinion that one of the positive things to come out of the experience during the pandemic is that accounting has been at the forefront of ensuring that as many organisations as possible will able to survive the pandemic and prosper in the post-pandemic environment. For example, Helen Brand OBE, the Chief Executive of ACCA has commented that “While health professionals have certainly played a vital role in saving lives, our members have been at the forefront of saving livelihoods.” In addition, the roles occupied by professional accountants and their job titles have undergone significant change to the extent that many management accountants have job titles such as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or Strategic Business partner. Thus research and commentaries have tended to focus on the skills required by professional accountants, as opposed to specific job titles. A further outcome of the pandemic is likely to be that the skill set and responsibilities of the professional accountant will continue to evolve in the future.    Required Drawing on academic literature and professional publications, critically evaluate: (i)  the changes that have been taking place in the roles and skills set of the professional accountant, and how these roles are likely to develop in the future; (ii)  how the adoption of the concept of Strategic Management Accounting and associated techniques are likely to impact on organisational performance;    and (iii) the extent to which your BSc programme is appropriate preparation for a career as a professional accountant.     Indicative weightings:                (i)  40%     (ii)  40%    (iii)  20% Total               (100 marks) Word Count Your submission (excluding your reference list, and any other Appendices) should be approximately 2,500 words. Submissions of less than 2,000 words or more than 3,500 words in total (ie including the reference list and appendices) will be NOT be marked. However, if the layout of your document doesn’t allow it to be fit on one page, this is not a major issue.
