Don’t Believe Everything You See of Hear on the News
Please answer the six (6) questions included in the Case Study entitled Don’t Believe Everything You See or Hear on the News. When answering the questions use the news source(s) that you typically use for your information as the example for developing your answers – for purposes of this exercise please limit your choice to either “quality” national newspapers publications (the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post – no the New Haven Register does not qualify!) or one of the major net work national news shows. Focus on ONE of the featured stories (i.e. one that is a longer article or longer feature of a broadcast) in developing your responses. YOU ARE NOT REVIEWING THE MCGRAW-HILL CASE STUDY; YOU ARE REVIEWING A NEWS ARTICLE OR BROADCAST THAT YOU HAVE FOUND. Alternatively, if you do not regularly read a written publication or watch one of the major network national news shows, now is your opportunity! Watch the national evening news on FOX, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, etc. one evening, pen and paper in hand to make notes, and focus on one of featured stories. As above, answer the questions based upon what you observed.
When doing this exercise please keep in mind that the main purpose is for you to use your critical thinking skills to make a judgment about the objectivity of the news as reported by a major national newspaper or television network. THE TOPIC COVERD NEEDS TO BE RELATED TO THE ENVIRONMENT OR PUBLIC HEALTH. Your submission must include the date, source, and title of the news item. If it is from an online source a link to it must be provided as well. Interview shows should not be used. Why? Because of their nature they tend to be very biased.
