E-250-09 & -10 – Spring 2021 – WORLD LITERATURE I
Final Examination: Essay –to be submitted via Blackboard!
In a response of 300 – 500 words (excluding quotations), address and discuss one of the following topics:
I. Medieval vs. Renaissance Outlooks: Review Cantos 5 and 26 from Dante’s Inferno as well as Petrarch’s “Ascent of Mont Ventoux” (when he is at the top of the mountain and consults his copy of Augustine). Then look over the sections we have read by Rabelais, including Gargantua’s letter to his son. What are differences between the two eras–Medieval and Renaissance–as regards the way people should lead their lives? That is, a life of piety and observance of norms vs. a life centered on self-development and action in the everyday world.
II. Lyly’s Gallathea: We have already completed a brief writing assignment on Act I, Scene III, of the Gallathea. Now you may wish to probe more deeply in this comic drama and consider gender issues and value conflicts such as are expressed between Diana and Venus or between Neptune–a vengeful god– and ordinary people.
Email me with any questions–for instance, if you having any difficulties locating the texts that you want to write about!
We must avoid plot summary as well as any language that comes from the internet!! What have you–as an individual reader–seen and experienced and thought? Remember that successful completion of this assignment also requires each student to demonstrate proficient sentence skills. We need clear, understandable writing throughout. For instance, we need to present good grammar, and we should avoid “things,” “do,”“you,”and “get”!
