Directions: Please respond to one of the following prompts with an approximately three to four page (double spaced, normal sized font, 250-300 words per page) essay. I do not mind if you are longer but be careful about being too much shorter. 950 words should be the bare minimum. Base your essay on what the specific prompt calls for. All three of the prompts call for basing your essay largely on Foner’s The Story of American Freedom. I prefer that you do not use outside sources but if you do use them sparingly and cite them fully
Please write an essay based on chapter 12 of Foner, “Sixties Freedom,” that explains the first sentence in the last paragraph of page 305, the last page in the chapter. The sentence reads as follows: “Just as the Civil War established the framework for several generations of American politics, and political campaigns revolved around the New Deal for several generations after Roosevelt’s death, so it seemed, Americans were condemned to refight the battles of the sixties long after the decade had ended.” Base your answer on Foner’s chapter 12 and your own understanding of how the issues in the sixties have continued to be refought to the present day. You can, of course, disagree with Foner’s premise and argue that American society has not been refighting those battles. While you do not have to cite in your discussion of contemporary issues, I do expect you to be reasonably accurate in what you write. If you do not feel qualified to write with at least some accuracy about present day and recent issues, I would recommend staying away from this prompt.
Format for citations: For this paper, you can either cite by writing the name of the author, Foner, of the document and then the page #. Put the cite in parentheses next to the cite. A cite would like this—(Foner, 44). Or, you can also use the Chicago Manual of Style for citations, which means using footnotes. To create a footnote in word, simply click on the reference tab and go to insert footnote, and then you type in the footnote. When you do the final paper base it on the proper sources; cite; and have some kind of structure to it. You will do much better if you do those things, or even some of them.
