Background: As you may know, China’s economy is the largest in the world and Chinese-American relations have become strained under President Trump and continue to be so under President Biden. China’s handling of the CoronaVirus, trade tensions between the USA and China which have led to a tariff war, and China’s treatment of pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong are just a few ways the America-China relationship has become strained. President Biden has hired you as a diplomatic expert to advise him on how China sees the world—particularly the Western World—and how events from China’s past may help explain the country and its leadership’s actions in the present.
Your policy paper will be divided into the following sections: Section 1: The Opium War and Boxer Rebellion and China’s Belt and Road Initiative/Military Buildup Briefly explain to President Biden the background to the Opium War and Boxer Rebellion and connect China’s humiliation in that conflict with its more assertive economic and military policies of today. In what ways might the Opium War still impact the way China views global trade today? In what ways does the Boxer Rebellion/China’s “Century Of Humiliation” possibly influence China’s current military policies, such as the creation of artificial islands with military bases in the South China Sea?
*** You must use a minimum of two sources (not encyclopedias or blogs) on the Belt and Road Initiative. Section 2: Mao and Xi Jinping Briefly explain the impact of Mao Zedong’s reign as leader of China from 1949—1976. What impact did he have on the country? Compare Mao’s reign to Xi Jinping’s leadership of China. In what ways might Xi Jinping be consciously modeling himself in Mao’s image and/or embracing Mao’s legacy to buttress his own politics? ******* You must use a minimum of two sources (not encyclopedias or blogs) on Mao and Xi Xinping.
Section 3: Chinese crackdown on Democratic Hong Kong and the Chinese Revolution of 1911/New Culture Movement
Briefly explain China’s fraught history regarding Western ideals of democracy, nationalism and Marxism by contextualizing the successes and shortcomings of the Chinese Revolution of 1911 and the “New Culture Movement.” Were Chinese views of democracy favorable at that time? Did democracy stabilize China at the time? Additionally, connect the Chinese people’s experience of Western ideals then to Communist China’s crackdown on pro-democracy protestors today in Hong Kong. Why does the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) disapprove of western-style liberal democracy?
*** You must use a minimum of two sources (not encyclopedias or blogs) on the Hong Kong Protest movement.
SECTION 4: In your final research paper, please include a reference to President Biden’s (in pdf below) expressed views regarding China. Would you say Mr. Biden is a cynic regarding China, a realist? In your final essay be sure to communicate whether you think Biden’s China policy is as expressed above is sound or unsound. PLEASE use 2 sources and link them for each section 1-3 in chicago format if u can
