Answer to three questions, each for 250-300 words. Please don’t use other sources.
1. There are three parts to this question. Drawing on week 9’s lecture “Reinventing China: Chinese New Waves and the Global Circuits,” first explain the idea behind “fifth and sixth generation” graduates from the Beijing Film Academy. Second, discuss how this generational difference helps us to understand the narrative and stylistic approach in Jia Zhangke’s 2001 film Unknown Pleasures. In your discussion, point to specific examples from the film. And third, consider how the interview by Michael Berry titled “Cultural Fallout: Director Jia Zhangke discusses Unknown Pleasures and His Ongoing Exploration of Chinese Society’s Transformation,” helps us to understand what Jia is doing in Unknown Pleasures. Since the interview discusses several of his films, think about the overall discussion and the different points he is making and refer to specific examples from the interview to make your point.
2. The question has three parts. In her essay, “Bollywood Spectaculars” Priya Jaikumar considers the cultural force of Bombay films. Drawing on this essay, first identify the argument and second trace how she makes her point (describe how she organizes her argument). Then, explain how her essay contributes to your understanding of Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007). Make sure to be specific in your writing and use of examples from the essay and the film.
3. This question has two parts and asks you to reflect on the overall experience of the course and provide a more personal response. Discuss how the history of international cinema that you have encountered in this class influences and informs either your film practice or study of film and media history. Your answer should 1) refer to specific instances where your own ideas changed with respect to topic(s) discussed in the class and why, and 2) explain how “old” and “new” films seen in class lead you to understand some aspect of contemporary filmmaking in new ways and why
