Discussion Thread: Antidepressant Efficacy
Please read the two articles in the Learn section debating the efficacy of antidepressants and discuss the basic conclusions of each focusing on the methods and statistical analysis used in each article (that is, please be clear to state the conclusions while noting how they arrived at those conclusions).
More specifically, discuss the methods and analyses used in each article clearly defining methodological and statistical terms. Discuss how and why you lean towards supporting the conclusions of one article over the other and explain if your position is based on scientific knowledge, lack thereof, or bias. Note the article with the strongest, most compelling position and why? Also, explain how there can by such disparate outcomes from what is ultimately the same data set (and, in case you missed it, it is literally the same data analyzed for each article). You MUST select a conclusion/position that aligns with one of the articles–explain your position using data/arguments from the articles and/or external sources.
Lastly, also read the third article in the Learn section about SSRIs being a “Double-Edged Sword” in major depression and determine if this helps explain the disparate conclusions from the other two articles. Lastly, please note clearly why understanding research methods and statistics is important to address these very important questions. As scientists, how do we reach a conclusion about scientific phenomenon when there is an apparent difference in conclusions? How should we and to what degree should we consider a Biblical view when it comes to trying to understand scientific outcomes? Similarly, explain from Biblical view the importance of developing knowledge, wisdom, and discernment around scientific methods and arguments in developing conclusions.
