Explain the importance of reliability and validity within DBA research study
As previously stated, reliability and validity are essential in assessing a quality doctoral research project (Anyan, 2015). Moreover, readers determine which study to read and rely upon based on how effectively the study establishes these two elements. Ultimately, determining the study’s effectiveness must answer whether the reader trusts the researchers, thus demonstrating the importance of reliability and validity. An example demonstrating trust is when one researcher uses another’s study for inclusion within their area of study; this demonstrates trust (Yin, 2018).
How to Achieve Reliability and Validity
Achieving reliability is determined by comparing different results of the same events, and validity is achieved by comparing the results with other relevant ideas, theories, or concepts (Yin, 2018). As stated in another way by Houghton et al. (2013), credibility is about the value and believability of the findings and dependability, determined by the data’s stability common substantive approaches to measuring, such as assessing the content, criterion, and construct: internal consistency, test-retest, and inter-rater (Yin, 2018). Another way to achieving both elements is through Yin’s (2018) emphasis on using multiple sources of data and logic. Finally, triangulation is helpful to test the reliability and validity of information to confirm the data and ensure the data is complete (Houghton et al., 2013). Therefore, if the data is valid in a qualitative study, it is a reliable and essential element to ensure the quality of qualitative research design.
