*The test should be drawn mainly from class content covered Wks. 1-5; perhaps ideas from your papers so far – a “synthesis,” without exact quotes, source listings, or illustrations. Quick outside “googling” might may be helpful (depending on details of your discussion),but throwing in things from random websites usually indicates confusion.

Instructions: Answer the first THREE essays below [1, 2, 3] and then choose ONE more for a total of four (5 pts. each); and then one additional Extra Credit (2 pts. – no partial) if you wish. [No substitutions for the first three.] Put the number of each essay you choose before your answer and designate which should be Extra Credit if you do it. About one page for each (including the Extra Credit), on topic (not: “art in history has many styles…,” or repeated long titles or other info.) *No more than 6-pp. total document including an Extra Credit.

*FYI: the questions all together represent some of the most important art ideas/directions in the history of modernist (European-based) art so far (although not all), and ultimately an exercise in pulling a lot together.

*Timing: Think of the test as a class-period “open-book” test with four c. 15-minute essays, a few minutes to read the choices carefully and a few minutes to check over, c. 60 – 75 min. including time to check over. (Of course, you can work through the week in increments and then carefully paste together.) You can put in as much time as you wish, however, for most, any more that that probably indicates some confusion that will show up anyway. Grading is based on how you put ideas and appropriate examples together, use of vocab, appropriate use of data (not overuse instead of ideas) and following instructions/question guidelines.

*Proof-read carefully for “sense” as well as basic like copying names or spelling (show that you took a few seconds to do that instead of trying to “sound out”!). I won’t be scrutinizes writing here as on research essays/papers, but, I have to see you took some time for basics!
*For all essays: consider form, content, context/s, as most relevant (judgment). Position the art/artists you discuss in place and time. *When discussing specific works, identify by artist, title, date (do not include other info for the purpose of this “test”; medium of paintings is assumed oil/canvas unless otherwise noted); size, as relevant; for example, Seurat’s La Grande Jatte is enormous (12 ft) – that would be something to point out / for other discussions, may not be crucial. *You can use the same artists/works in different answers (presumably different emphasis) if you believe relevant.
Essay Rubric (approx – 20 pt. total):
5 – followed questions/instructions/on topic throughout
5 – summarized main ideas clearly, with comprehension
5 – chose appropriately artist and art examples in relation to those main ideas and gave enough details (data/description) to identify works discussed
5 – use appropriate vocab / terms / points of context
Extra Credit (+2) carried over if necessary (no partial).

2. What type/s of subject matter, themes and painting style are associated with the loose “Symbolist” movement/style (late 19th c. – early 20th century)? Give a brief overview (consider antecedents) and discuss three specific works of art (paintings and/or sculptures) by three different artists that reflect aspects of Symbolism prominently. (Can use artists closely identified with Symbolism and/ or who created specific work/s appropriate in PROMINENT ways.)
3. Discuss three works by three different artists that show aspects associated with the term “primitivism” as it developed in the late 19th – early 20th century art (may consider antecedents). Expand to discuss other works and/or aspects of their respective oeuvres, such as themes, directions and/or associations of each artist.

4. Art Nouveau in architecture: a few associated formal/aesthetic (stylistic) characteristics, overlapping w/ art nouveau design overall; discuss in a bit of detail one example (a building) by Victor Horta and one by Antoni Gaudi; give locations; mention structure, ornament, layouts (as relevant).

5. Discuss the Futurists and Der Blaue Reiter; two artist groups; main artists/founders; aims within the group; four specific art examples by four artists; how they show the artistic goals associated with each (in many ways very different / perhaps some overlapping in different ways – your judgments).

6. Discuss Van Gogh and Ernst Kircher, two artists associated with highly emotional expressive individual styles. Discuss their own respective milieus / social circumstances and affiliations, art interests and aims, and compare two works by each.

7 Comparison: Rodin and Brancusi / in depth, mentioning several specific works by each; think about time, place, stylistic directions, technique/s, effects.

8) American artists: Discuss Winslow Homer and Henry Ossawa Tanner – where/how they fit into directions in American art of the time and where/how they may overlap with directions in European art (second half of the 19th century). Discuss in detail at least two paintings by each (does not have to be a “close” close comparison or, can be).
