StructuralEngineering1 FlexuralBeamsPractical Aim: The aim of this practical is to observe and report on the flexural behaviour of multiple beams when laboratory tested in 4 point bending. A total of 5 beams will be tested, which includes 2 timber beams, 1 steel beam and 2 reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The beams will be tested in ‘demonstration mode’ so the laboratory staff will place the beams in the testing rig and operate the testing and recording machines. Your objective is to observe the behaviour of the specimens and accurately report on specimen failure modes such as yielding, cracking or crushing behaviour. It is highly recommended to take notes while the flexural behaviour is being explained to you and also take photos of the failed specimens to include in your report. A brief overview of the specimens is provided below in Fig.1.
