OLRN1020 Human Sexuality- Demonstrate Interdisciplinary Breadth

Task

The positional paper requires that you:

  • Take a position or make an assertion on a controversial aspect of Sex and Sexuality in Canada
  • Review the literature and prove your position/assertion using peer reviewed research
  • Analyze relevant theoretical and practical issues
  • Consider your assertion from an interdisciplinary perspective. Bring in an interdisciplinary perspective by providing a breadth of material.  For example, integrate issues of race, gender, sexual orientation and other sites of difference into your paper;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking through analysis of material. Provide peer reviewed proof points to support your position/assertion. Draw on relevant course reading and discussion
  • (Optional) Integrate personal experiences as a data point. Ensure that this is limited, as it is still an academic paper, not an opinion paper or journal.
  • Papers that do not take a position on a controversial topic will not be accepted as having completed the assignment (e.g. informational research papers; papers that are not of a controversial nature or not about an aspect of Sex/Sexuality). It is highly recommended that your review your position topic with your instructor in advance to ensure that the above criteria are met.

Expectations for term paper:

  • Length: 8 -10 pages excluding references and title page.
  • Typed, double-spaced, normal size font, normal margins, full pages of content, saved in Word or pdf.

  • Minimum of 8 reference sources – a minimum of 6 references should be from peer reviewed journal articles. You are allowed to use a maximum of two course readings OR a maximum of 2 non-peer reviewed references (e.g. association websites) towards the required 8 references.
