contract entitled: Private Sector Contract (PSC).

a) Focusing on the above statement. outline what is the key differences between this new
contract (PSC) and the RIAI form that a quantity surveyor needs to be aware of when
managing risks and controlling project costs. Reference relevant contract clause in your
answer.

b) Again focusing on this statement, outline what you see as the similarities and differences
between this Private Sector Contract (PSC) and the equivalent Public Works Contract for
Building Works designed by the Employer (PW-CF1).

Written Report
Students will be expected to submit a spiral bound copy and upload an electronic version of the
submission in pdf format to the Turnitin link on Blackboard. This pdf file must be an exact replica of
the hard copy submission. The report will be typed on one side of A4 sheets, using 12 point Arial font
and 1.5 line spacing. The report should contain the following, as required:
a) One title page;
b) One page containing a declaration of originality (in accordance with IT Carlow policy)
c) A table of contents;
d) List of figures
e) List of tables
f) List / definition of abbreviations used
g) An introduction;
h) A literature review;
i) Discussion
j) Interpretation of results and conclusions;
k) A list of references and, if appropriate, a bibliography;
l) Appendices as appropriate
The body of the report (g to j above) should contain not less than 1,400 and no more than 1,700 words, exclusive of the
preliminary pages, the references, bibliography and appendices.
Generally, abbreviations should not be used, but where universally recognized abbreviations are used, then they should be
listed and defined in a section at the beginning of the report.
Referencing System
The report should use the Harvard System of Referencing. The Teaching and Learning Centre at Institute of Technology,
Carlow have produced a booklet on the use of this system and all students should ensure that they have a copy and that
they adhere to the guidelines therein. The use of foreign-language source material to support a thesis or argument is
permitted. However, the onus would be on the student to provide, at the very minimum, an attested translated version of
such material in order to facilitate a reasonable evaluation. In order to avoid adding to your word count within the body of
the dissertation the translation could be added as an appendix at the back.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is not permitted. Material from the work of others (whether code, text, diagram or other) should be fully
acknowledged. Material based on the work of others (research, for example, phrased in your own words) should include a
reference list or bibliography in the standard format. The Institute’s official declaration on work origin must be included in
your dissertation, and signed in any printed copy of the dissertation.
