HNB3224 Mental health and and Psychotic Episode

Question:

The purpose of this assignment is to:

  • Reflect and critically analyse the literature in relation to a clinical scenario
  • Discuss the consumer’s perspective and lived experience
  • Describe best practice approaches/models/standards/guidelines
  • Explore the mental health nurse’s role

The unit learning outcomes assessed are:

  1. Examine the experience and treatment of individuals presenting with mental illness;
  2. Analyse the ethical and legal requirements for mental health care;
  3. Explore the standards of practice for mental health nurses

Case study 1:

Judy is a 20 year old who was admitted to hospital following a psychotic episode. She was commenced on olanzapine and within 4 months gained over 20kgs. She was eventually discharges and over the course of a few years continued to gain weight. She put on another 15kgs to reach a weight of 105Kgs. Her height is 165cms. She has just been referred to a primary health care service and is meeting the mental health nurse for the first time.

Case study 2:

There is often a discord between staff on how best to manage challenging behaviours. You hear shouting in the consumer day area of your unit and the nurse in charge asks you to draw up some intramuscular infection (IMI) sedation for a patient who is shouting. Your colleagues start to form a team to approach the patient in order to restrain him, take him to seclusion and administer the medication. You feel that the patient is just frustrated and should be de-escalated. 

Choose one of the case studies above related to  Module 2 (Legal, Ethical and Standards of Care) Module 3 (Behaviours of concern) or Module 4 (Physical illness and comorbidities). This topic must be an evidence-based essay that is related to the case study and must inform the mental health field of nursing practice. You must consider the consumers perspective of the experience, the ethical and legal requirements and incorporate recovery-oriented and trauma informed approach .  You  must also research the area and provide evidence based journal articles and clinical practice guidelines that support your content.

Your essay should:

  • Use high-quality contemporary, evidence-based literature (i.e. peer reviewed journals) to inform the discussion and critical analysis
  • Review and critically analyse the literature
  • Be 2000 words including in-text citations (but excluding words contained in the reference section)

The essay should be structured as follows:

Start by setting the context and providing relevant background information

Include a thesis statement that is a response to the essay question, and that summarises the main aim or argument of the essay

Outline the main ideas to be discussed in the essay, in the order they appear in the body of the essay

Each paragraph should cover a single idea expressed in a topic sentence, followed by supporting evidence and examples from contemporary academic literature, including peer-reviewed journal articles
