SET:
The teacher will sing and waltz into the classroom to the music video with lyrics of the song “Masquerade” playing and wearing an eye-catching mask and ask students to put on the masks that they will find on their desks. The music video will play for about 15 to 20 seconds. Then the teacher will pause this music video, minimize the screen, project another screen with the text of the poem: ‘So Who Is Fooled.” The teacher will ask her students to read aloud (choral reading) with her – all students also have a copy of the poem (handout) on their desks. After the choral reading, the teacher will remark that the poem implies that many people use some kind of mask. As a transition the teacher will ask students if they have ever had occasion to wear a costume or mask. (Most students will respond affirmatively). However, just to ensure all students understand the term, the teacher will then remark, “Let’s be sure everyone understands the term mask.” This statement serves to transition into the Explanation as listed above in the Content Outline Section of the lesson plan and projects the Powerpoint on the screen.

The teacher will softly play the song Masquerade in the background (no video on screen – just sound), ask the students to put their masks back on their faces, and ask the following questions to conclude the lesson by having students respond with key points of the lesson:
How are masks both used literally (the physical mask) and figuratively (the false front/face)?
Why are false faces or fronts intentionally applied in the sales arena?
How can these false faces or fronts be harmful instead of useful?
