OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTATIONS:
This assignment allows students to explore a topic of their choice (see below) and present that topic to the class through
an online discussion post (written or video). Through their discussion post students will apply their skills in critical
thinking, original analysis, and writing/presentation. Students will strengthen their understanding of key course themes
and major perspectives in the study of children’s rights by connecting their discussion post and replies with the course
material. Once students have posted their analysis, they will continue the discussion by replying/commenting on at least
two posts by their classmates.
Choice of Topic:
Students have a wide range of possible topics for this assignment. Most students find a brief web article or video on their
topic and include this in their post for background information, but you may also reflect on a personal experience or
choose a primary source that hasn’t been analyzed by others (for example, an advertisement or poster in political
campaign). You are not required to do any additional research, but if you need more background information you may use
either online or scholarly articles. If you are using online articles for context or background information, be sure to be
consider how reliable your source is and include this in your analysis.
You should choose a specific debate or issue within a broader topic.
(For example, instead of choosing “children with disabilities” as your topic, you’d want to choose something more specific like “How
are children in Canada advocating for inclusive schools for neurodiverse students?” Remember, your analysis will be a concise
discussion post, not an essay!)
A strong topic typically meets all of the following criteria:
1. You are interested in learning or thinking more about this issue.
2. The issue is current (if you want to choose something more than 2 years old, just check with the professor first)
3. It will lead to an interesting discussion with your classmates
4. It is connected to the course in a meaningful way.
5. Background information can be easily shared (through a link to a website, video, article etc) for readers to learn
more.
Some examples of broad topics that have been popular with past students include: Western media portrayal of children’s
rights activists like Greta Thunberg or Malala Yousafzai; Children challenging school policies like dress codes or police
in schools; children’s labour rights in the global economy; global movement of children through adoption, surrogacy, or
trafficking; the impact of COVID 19 on children in Canada and around the world; disability and children’s rights;
discrimination faced by trans youth.
This assignment is a great chance for students to bring something into the course that has been overlooked in the other
course material.

Creating Your Post:
There is no standard format or organization that you need to follow in your post, however, it should include the following
in some way:
• A link to the item/issue you are discussing (unless you are choosing to reflect on a personal experience)
• A very brief summary of the key issues raised
• A critical analysis of the issue that includes connections to the course material (readings, lectures, videos)
• In-text citations when ideas from the course are mentioned and all references listed in proper form (ASA/APA) at
the end of your post. (if you are creating a video, a reference list is sufficient)
While the writing/presentation should be advanced and professional, it is fine to use personal pronouns and include your
own experience here- provided this is done appropriately.
