Research Essay – Annotated Bibliography
What’s the purpose of an annotated bibliography?
To gather and summarize into one document information about a topic you are researching
To create a quick reference sheet of your various sources and how they will be useful to your paper

Who is the audience?
You: The document will help you to research, organize, and draft your research essay.

Guidelines:
Make an MLA works cited list of your source. Then, beneath each citation, write a paragraph—at least 5 sentences—that: 1) summarizes the theme/purpose of the source, 2) evaluates the source’s worth, 3) comments on the intended audience, 4) explains how source helps define and clarify your topic and prove your claim(s).
Organize your citations alphabetically by author or title if no author is listed, using hanging indentations (traditional Works Cited page format). All types of sources have different types of citation, so be sure to enter your information in the appropriate category (Interview? Article? Book? Database? Etc…)
To make your annotated bibliography easier to read, please bold the citation, but leave the annotation paragraph un-bolded.

Than, Ker. “Jacques Cousteau Centennial: What He Did, Why He Matters.” National Geographic Daily News, 10 Nov. 2016, news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/06/100611-jacques-cousteau-100th-anniversary-birthday-legacy-google/National Geographic.
This article for National Geographic News celebrates what would have been the 100th birthday of ocean exploration pioneer Jacques Cousteau. The article overviews five of Cousteau’s major achievements: pioneering scuba equipment, creating underwater film footage to bring the ocean to millions of viewers, inventing underwater base camps, restricting commercial whaling, and helping to stop the underwater dumping of nuclear waste. The main point of the article is that Cousteau started out as an explorer and not an environmentalist. As he grew older and more experienced with oceanography, he began to further understand the ways that humans were harming the beautiful underwater world that he devoted his life to exploring. As a result of his experience, he became more outspoken about protecting the planet’s water systems. For example, he was one of the first to speak out about ocean preservation. The article makes clear that even though Cousteau contributed to harming ocean ecosystems earlier in his career, he ended up as a true activist. Finally, this source is widely respected in the scientific, marine community.
“Who We Are.” The Cousteau Society. The Cousteau Society. http://www.cousteau.org/who/. Accessed 10 Nov. 2016.
This site describes and provides connections to two non-for profit societies founded by Jacques Cousteau, which continue to operate in his memory. The Cousteau Society is a worldwide organization that sponsors exploration, education, and protection efforts surrounding water systems. As the site explains, Equipe Cousteau, a sister society, is headquartered in France for the same purposes, as well as to help establish Cousteau’s home nation as a world leader in ocean preservation. This site is a wealth of information regarding Cousteau’s legacy because the site chronicles the efforts that continue to be applied today all over the world to protect water ecosystems with Jacques Cousteau as a founder and inspiration. Clearly, this site will be more biased than other sources because this source celebrates Cousteau’s legacy and will not be critical of his actions.
