ENGL 112 – Descriptive Essay
(Note: Must be a place that actually exists and is important to you, hence personal significance; this isn’t a Tourism Report or a Brochure)
Content – 6 Marks, evaluated across 3 parts:
Imagery – 2 Marks
Can I tell where the place is? Is the writing an example of work that provides deliberate detail and relates to the writer’s (or readers’) senses? Is the description accurate, compelling and illustrative?
Mood – 2 Marks
Do I know how the writer is trying to make me feel? Do I know how the writer feels about the place that they are writing about? Does the writing convey feeling effectively?
Perspective – 2 Marks
Do I know why the writer is writing this, whether it is an implicit or explicit argument? Would I be able to relate the purpose of essay to someone else? Is the purpose of the essay provided in a discernible and apparent fashion?
Structure – 2 Marks
Are your ideas and arguments presented in an effective and understandable fashion? Are your ideas and arguments deliberately organized and without logical error?
Writing – 2 Marks
Have you written your Essay well – meaning: clearly, concisely and with minimal grammar and spelling issues? If citations are necessary, have you utilized proper citation practice – e.g., titles are italicized or in scare quotes, embedded citations are properly utilized, references are without error?
Total = 10 Marks
