Discussion Topic/Assignment:

Using what we have learned so far in this course, discuss how you would explain a mood disorder as well as treatment for this to a newly diagnosed client who is reluctant to start therapy. Explain your approach. Depending on what theories make the most sense to you, and the style of work you find most interesting, your approach will vary from your peers. You are encouraged to show your authentic style as a social worker as you explain your approach.

This week will be working to develop understanding of mood disorders, anxiety and trauma as it relates to treatment, applying what we have learned so far in this course. We will pay particular attention to depression and bipolar disorder. Exploring these illnesses through the lens of the various theories we have discussed to date. We will work to understand the pathology of anxiety with attention to the ways it manifests including anxiety, panic, OCD and phobias. Lastly, an inclusive review of trauma, it impacts on clinic work and the ways it effects a person’s functioning.

Curious about what psychoeducation might look like? There are lots of ways to interact with patients to provide psychoeducation. This may include casual conversations, lectures, videos, worksheets, handouts, and group work. Psychoeducation will vary depending on how you practice. The information you provide may be tailored to your personal orientation to practice. How you explain symptoms and your treatment recommendations may change, but the basis of what psychoeducation is remains the same. 

This video is from a clinical psychologist, Dr. Danita Morales Ramos. She explains her use of psychoeducation in her practice. This is a nice overview and a realistic way many providers use this tool in their work.

The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) is an exceptional resource for therapists, patients, families, and the community at large. There are local chapters all over the country that offer support groups, peer interactions, informational sessions to the community, and a plethora of amazing resources. Below is an example of the national website’s resource page. It includes a brief, one-minute psychoeducational video about depression.

While we will be more formally discussing the application and integration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy into psychanalytic work next week, this video is added to week 5 to help with regards to psychoeducation. Aid students as they consider the idea of psychoeducation, as this in a common aspect of CBT treatment and 2. Help prepare students for next week. This film provides an overview and a mock therapy session. As students watch the film, consider times when the therapist provided psychoeducation, had an option to provide psychoeducation, or a time when you thought it would be necessary. Think back on this film as you read next week and feel free to watch it again!
