Discussion question.
Imagine that Alice has been employed as a hospital admitting representative for six years. She has consistently received good performance evaluations. However, over the course of the past three months, her manager has received complaints from patients that she has been rude and unprofessional. Her manager has told HR that she should be fired immediately. What would be your first action upon receiving this request?

To be fired immediately is a little harsh. I would understand immediate termination if she stole something or assaulted someone. But being rude is a matter of opinion. So people can come off as harsh but it would be important to bring the matter to her attention first. The manager has not mentioned if there was a meeting with her about her behavior or to see if something was happening outside of work that is affecting her at work. People carry everything they are going through with them all the time. If we show empathy than maybe she will allow people into whatever it is she is dealing with. Being rude to someone is not a ground to fire someone. It is however a ground for corrective action. Correcting the behavior by bringing it to her attention is the first step. I think a verbal or written warning would be better because this is a means of getting her attention. There could also be a consideration to transfer her to a position where she has zero interaction with patients. If after the corrective action and/or transfer the behavior is still going on then termination could be considered as long as all other means of resolution is met. There has to be a paper trail to show that all options have been considered and termination is the final resolution because nothing else worked.
