COLLAPSE
American existential psychiatrist, Dr. Irvin Yalom once said, “People need people – for initial and for continued survival, for socialization, for the pursuit of satisfaction. No one – not the dying, not the outcast, not the mighty – transcends the need for human contact,” (Yamon, 2021). Dr. Yalom suggests that utilizing other humans in group settings can be extremely beneficial to anything needed, including survival. Individuals in recovery, new or veteran, can potentially benefit mentally and emotionally from group psychotherapy.
Most Americans have, minimally, heard of group therapy meetings whether in need or in joking. The serenity prayer is uttered by people who are not even suffering from addiction or are enrolled in meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous . Group therapy can range in benefits from supportive united mindsets being able to speak together for support to gaining a better understanding of how counseling works (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). As beneficial as group therapy can be, however, it is not an ideal situation for everyone.
Some people unfortunately would not benefit from group therapy (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). There are certain personality traits and characteristics that do not react the best to relations or communication with other humans (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). Negative influences can also be potentially problematic to a newly introduced individual in recovery. Sometimes individual counseling is absolutely necessary due to issues or citations not being appropriate or uncomfortable for group settings (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020).
If I were ever a therapist, I would enjoy my clients coming to one of my group sessions first before meeting with them one on one. Personally, I would rather talk to a group of one hundred individuals in a public forum on a stage than be one on one with a counselor. There is less vulnerability in a crowd. It would help me recognize that in my patients as well get a better understanding of their mind set and understanding of sobriety to help me implement an individual tailored method.

COLLAPSE
Hello Professor Brown and Class,
What are the advantages and disadvantages of psychotherapeutic groups, psychoeducational groups, and self-help groups in the trTherapy in any form is a step towards realizing you have an addiction and also possibly understanding why you are drawn to your addiction. The first step towards wanting help is to find some form of therapy that will guide you to living a successful addiction free life. There are many advantages to psychotherapeutic group therapy and one could be the support and similarity you experience when in group therapy. Some may feel comfortable with sharing their stories and understanding that there could be success or failure in recovery but the participant should always recognize during these group sessions that they are never alone and should not feel embarrassed about their situation. The disadvantage of psychotherapeutic groups is the fact that an individual can feel judged and not feel comfortable with sharing in a group setting. Therefore they may not be willing to share information and eventually that can lead to relapse.
Psychoeducation groups can have it’s advantages for some because they may need more structure during their time of addiction. There are specific issues that one may experience and the fact that this therapy group is designed to focus on specific learning outcomes (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020, 210) is a successful tool to use. The disadvantage could be detrimental to a person who has experienced group therapy before perhaps more than once, it may be clear that this person will thrive better with one on one therapy. There could be things a person is batting with mentally and oftentimes, when trauma is the cause of an addiction, there should be a more intimate setting for the patient.
Psychotherapy has been shown to improve emotions and behaviors and to be linked with positive changes in the brain and body (© 2021 American Psychiatric Association., 2019). My thoughts on being a group therapist are very positive because I love to inspire and teach others so planning a therapy session, assessing the outcome is very appealing to me. I can thrive in a one on one session but collaborating in a group setting and hearing people share their thoughts, fears and desires in life is encouraging and motivating for the group setting.
