PART I
Look outside the medium of painting and sculpture. Please find a writer, filmmaker, designer (fashion, furniture, etc), or musician that works in the Surrealist tradition.
Identify the artist and ONE piece by the artist.
What features of their work are coded as “surreal?” Why?
Compare/contrast the work to an art piece we covered in the online lecture/film
Include an image or link to the art piece.
PART II
After reading about WWI and WWII and learning about the works of George Grosz and Otto Dix, please respond to the following:
Choose ONE piece EACH by Grosz and Dix and describe how each artist represents war and/or atrocity in their artworks.
Find a contemporary artist that uses war as a muse for their work. It can be from any geographical region, but must address the following:
Name of the artist
Title of the artwork
What war or conflict is represented?
Briefly discuss the formal elements
How does the artist represent war?
Compare/contrast the formal OR contextual elements to a work by Grosz or Dix or any artist from the readings or powerpoint.
