Workplace Discrimination
Workplace Discrimination
Background
Rovans Hospital is a public maternal health care that is dedicated to well-being of all women and newborns. The hospital specializes in the reproductive health services such as pregnancy related services, intrapartum and after birth services. Other services related to family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, regular pelvic and breast exams are also offered at Rovans Hospital. The facility has various of well-trained professionals such as family practice physicians, gynecologist, and obstetricians.
The Problem
The facility condemns any type of discrimination at the workplace but unfortunately the following problems have been reported.
Discrimination in the type of services offered- several cases of employees who are not treated equally has been reported to the administration. Most affected are women employees who have witnessed harsh reactions from their seniors while others were reported to be favored by the same bosses. Again, several complaints from patients who were not given quality services especially due to poverty and race (Rivenbark & Ichou, 2020). The rich or white patients failed to queue while the black and poor waited long in the lines.
Effects of the problems on the organization
The above-mentioned problems have led to the following negative impacts on the organization.
Quality of care- discrimination in health services can lead to delayed medical attention and inequality within patients or staff, lack of trust for the facility, unutilized preventive resources and high children and women mortality rate. When a organization is functioning with discrimination it delays patient care.
Workplace safety- bullying of workers portrayed by humiliation, unhealthy jokes targeting individuals, yelling, physical harassment, threats, misleading information such as deadlines and excessive performance monitored by seniors and use of abusive language. Also, some female reported harassment from male doctors and unwelcoming attitude from staffs. Also, some supervisors were reported for consistently denying a justifiable request without a good explanation. Bullying at work place- harassment, yelling and other types of bullying leads to individuals lack of confidence, depressions and frustrations and many other diseases (Omar et al., 2019). This affects general performance of the facility and the trust from the patients.
Ethical and legal matters- both patients and employees lack respect for each other, treats others unjustly and harm each other both mentally and physically. Unethical leadership and setting of unrealistic targets can frustrate employees hence should be avoided. Wrong use of job technology such as using company phones to call friends, visiting unrelated websites during working hours is another problem in the facility. Every organization outlines the ethical matters and values to be uphold for institution to run smoothly. Failure to uphold ethical and legal issues leads to disrespect among employees, lack of authority and moral obligations from seniors as well as poor teamwork coordination (Pager & Western, 2017).
Strategic plan
The following disciplinary actions will be taken if the employees show any of type discrimination at workplace.
The compliance audit will be conducted regularly through feedbacks, questionnaires, anonymous reporting and hiring external experts to audit the organization. Failure to treat everyone equally and with respect will lead to:
individual employee suspension or termination of work
legal actions such as serving jail term and fine payment
Discrimination is Prohibited most governments’ constitution either indirectly or directly against any individual based on pregnancy, religion, color, age, ethnic, sex, marital status, race, culture, language, dress, disability and healthy status.
All the employees will be undergoing mandatory training on weekly basis to be trained on ethical and legal issues as well as how to handle discrimination.
