In contemporary world politics ‘security’ is an increasingly common way of referring to a wide variety of problems, concerns, and dangers. Scholars have identified a growing ‘securitization’ of global life. At the same time, however, it is also apparent that ‘security’ often works selectively or unevenly, with variable consequences for different groups or social domains. In analyzing the politics of ‘security’, therefore, it is important to keep in mind the various contexts of security discourses and practices, and how this helps us to think about what ‘security’ does, about who or what is secured – and who is not – and the wider effects of ‘security’. With these thoughts in mind, please complete the following assignment: Write a critical analysis of the politics of security as expressed in Environmental security. In conducting your analysis, make sure you answer the following questions: What is the dominant conception of security? (i.e., how is the problem defined to which security is the response or solution?) Who or what is to be secured? (i.e., who or what is threatened or otherwise rendered insecure?) How, through what practices, is security to be produced? (i.e., what are the causes of insecurity and how do specific practices claim to address this problem?) How plausible are the claims to produce security as a result of these practices? (i.e., do the practices in fact address the causes of insecurity? Do they in fact produce security?) What are the distributional effects or consequences of these practices? (i.e., how do the practices of security and their effects impact on both the object of security – that which is to be secured – and the subject of security – that agent responsible for producing security? How do these practices impact on other groups or domains?) How plausible is the dominant conception of security when considered in the context of the actual effects of security practices? (i.e., is the dominant conception of security an accurate description of what security means in this domain or should we adopt an alternative conception? If the latter, how would suggest we redefine the dominant conception of security in this domain?)
