Personality/Temperament
Assessment Assignment

Due:
• In-class activity week 4 – mandatory attendance
• Pre-work required

Worth:
• 15% of final mark (individual mark)

Overview:
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for students to learn about themselves and how to take the best advantage of their natural talents and skills to find and succeed in the job and career they will love.

Most organizations rely on personality style “testing” tools to screen candidates to ensure they are hiring people for the best cultural fit.

Throughout the program, we have explored the importance of personal and professional growth, professionalism, first impressions and your personal brand and the world of advertising. You are going to combine all of this knowledge in this assignment.

Pre-Class Preparation – to be completed BEFORE week 4 class. You will write your findings in a word document for steps 1-3 below and bring it to class in week 4.

Step One – Interviews and Reflection

a) Using effective questioning techniques, find out what perceptions your family members (minimum of 2 family members) have of you as a person and a professional. Get enough input to provide great detail into these perceptions and document your findings.

b) Using effective questioning techniques, find out what perceptions your peers (at school and outside of school – minimum of two) have of you as a person and as a professional. Get enough input to provide great detail into these perceptions and document your findings.

c) Evaluate your findings and document the similarities and the differences between the perceptions of each group. Reflect in the findings. Did most of your family find you to be outgoing while your peer group found you to be reserved? What differences and similarities are there between what they perceived and how you view yourself? In order to be successful, we need to know how people see us since some of our actions/traits, may be misinterpreted. It is important to know how we are perceived so we can enhance or alter some of our behaviours/mannerisms. Record your reflections in your journal.

Step Two- Myers-Briggs Personality Test

Complete your Myers-Briggs Personality Test online:

Myers-Briggs Test
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test is a questionnaire that helps identify how people perceive the world around them and make decisions. It is based on the theory proposed by Carl Jung that humans experience the world using four principal psychological functions – sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking – and that one of these four functions is dominant for a person most of the time.
“The underlying assumption of the MBTI is that we all have specific preferences in the way we construe our experiences, and these preferences underlie our interests, needs, values, and motivation.” Kaplan, R. M.; Saccuzzo, D. P. (2009). Psychological Testing: Principles, Applications, and Issues (7 ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth. p. 502. ISBN 978-0-495-50636-2.

Once complete, do some research on your personality type. 16personalities.com will help with this and will provide you with some insight into how you see the world around you and act based on those perceptions. Record your reflections in your journal.

Step Three – Complete your Kiersey Temperance Profile online
(1 hour)

For this workshop we will be using Keirsey:
http://www.keirsey.com/default.aspx

http://keirsey.com/

The traditional starting place in Career Planning is WHO AM I? The more one is able to recognize their strengths, dreams, and options, the better choices you can make as you start into the job-finding process.

Using the Keirsey Temperament Sorter http://www.keirsey.com/default.aspx is a good step in helping to put personal perceptions and abilities into focus.

The more one can verbalize about themselves, the better they will be able to know how to translate their talents into the world of work.

Individually:
a) Students to identify their own KTI “Temperament” using the online tool:
http://www.keirsey.com/sorter/register.aspx

b) Students to review:
http://www.keirsey.com/personalityzone/wz_top.asp

Reflect on the insights provided and answer the following questions (individually) in your journal:
– What is my “Temperament” according to KTI?
– What has been identified about my personality/temperament that I had not considered in past?
– How can attributes identified in the KTI help guide my career path, options?
– Which attributes identified in the KTI can I articulate in my resume, e-portfolio and interviews?

Step Four – In-Class Workshop
(45 minutes)

Participate in the personality style and temperance workshop in class in week 4. Record the findings of this exercise in your journal. Reflect on these findings and how they relate to your personal branding.

In groups:
Students will be placed in groups with other students that have identified as other “Temperaments”.

In groups, student discussion to include:
a) Descriptions of each of the 4 KTI Temperaments
b) How could an employer use the KTI (or other personality “tests”) when recruiting employees?
http://www.keirsey.com/products_overview.aspx

c) How can knowing your own personal Temperament help in job search efforts?

Record key points of group discussion on google docs or other sharable platform. This information will be useful for your journal.

Step Five – Billboard-In-Class
(45 minutes)
Considering the perceptions of your family, your peer group and your own personality style, as well as what you have learned about yourself through the Myers-Briggs test and your KTI, create a “billboard” depicting your personal brand on one PowerPoint slide (you may use Google docs as well).

Choose three words and as many images (at least one – no limit) to best describe you and include them in this “billboard”. Imagine that this billboard will be on display at Yonge and Dundas Square for all to see!

Step Six – Dropbox your “Billboard”:
Make any changes to your “Billboard” as a result of your group discussion and post your completed PowerPoint slide (“billboard”) in the SLATE Assignment dropbox by end of the class workshop. Include your write up portion from steps 1-3 along with your billboard!
