Your final grade will be calculated from the mean of six, non-cumulative tests, the mean of five case studies, and the mean of two article abstracts. Each grade item is worth 100 points. Characteristics such as how hard you worked, how much you care, your attendance, or how badly you need this class for nursing school etc. are not used to calculate your course grade. Course Description:

               This course introduces abnormal physiological health transitions across the lifespan incorporating evidence-based interaction in professional practice. Disorders affecting cells, tissues, organs, and systems involved in the regulation of structure and function within the human organism are examined. How diseases affect the structures, functions, and systems of the human organism are explored. The influence of genetics, ethnicity, environment, and age are incorporated.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1.         Demonstrate understanding of core knowledge and problem-solving principles to examine how causes and risk factors contribute to the development of specified disease processes.

2.         Demonstrate understanding of core knowledge and problem-solving principles to discuss clinical manifestations of selected disease processes and health problems.

4.         Demonstrate critical thinking in exploring causes and risk factors and how they contribute to the development and progression of specific disease processes.

5.         Practice utilizing healthcare information and technology in describing the interactions between genetic, environmental, and other related factors in the development of specified disease processes.

Evaluation and Grading:

            Your final grade will be calculated from the mean of six, non-cumulative tests, the mean of five case studies, and the mean of two article abstracts. Each grade item is worth 100 points. Characteristics such as how hard you worked, how much you care, your attendance, or how badly you need this class for nursing school etc. are not used to calculate your course grade. I expect everyone to try their best, to attend every day, and to care very much about their grades. I don’t give extra credit. Final grades will be rounded up to the next percentage point (e.g. 79.2 will get rounded up to an 80).

 Case studies are due by class time on the due date. Abstracts are due by the time of the final exam. If a case study or abstract is late, you will receive a zero for that assignment.

Grade weights:

Tests = 50%                                         Mean of test scores = 60 x .5     = 30

Case studies = 25%                              Case studies = 100 x .25           = 25

Abstracts = 25%                                    Abstracts = 100 x .25                 = 25

                                                            Total                                        = 80 (final grade B)

Any material covered in lecture, required textbooks, or lecture notes will be fair game for exams.

Excused absences will only be granted if you are sick and confined to your bed or if there was a death in the immediate family.  “Immediate family” includes parents, brothers or sisters, or grandparents.  If you miss the exam due to illness, you must have a doctor’s note stating that you had to be confined to your bed.  If you miss for a funeral, you must provide proof of your attendance.  Missing an exam because a family member was hospitalized or is very sick does not qualify as an excused absence.  Missing an exam because you attended the funeral of a friend or because a friend was hospitalized does not qualify as an excused absence. If your absence was excused and you can provide evidence, then you will then be permitted to make up the exam at MY convenience. This may require you to miss another class on your schedule or take off work. All case studies and abstracts are due on 5/2 by 6:00p. There will be a significant grade penalty if you turn in case studies or abstracts late.

Grading scale:

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 59 and below

Attendance:

            Attendance is not taken. It is your responsibility to review all necessary materials available on the Folio page to prepare for each test.

Academic and Professional Conduct:

            Consequences for any incident of academic dishonesty can range from a zero for the assignment to failure in the course.  Academic dishonesty includes cheating and plagiarism. Incidents of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Students.  I will assume that you have read and understand the Student Conduct Code for university policies concerning academic misconduct.

ADA Accommodations:

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), this course will honor requests for reasonable accommodations made by individuals with disabilities or demonstrating appropriate need for learning environment adjustments. Students must self-disclose their disability to the Student Accessibility Resource Center (SARC) before academic accommodations can be implemented.
