ENG 122 Critical Responses
For this assignment, you will write two critical responses to the assigned texts (one for each). Your essay should a) highlight the major ideas of the piece and b) respond to at least one major idea with a focus on how the text works and/or does not work as an argument. Think of this as a combination of a summary, analysis, rhetorical analysis, and argument. What is the text about? What is happening on a deeper level? Does the argument work? Why? What rhetorical strategies are at play in the text?
For these papers, you must bring in one outside source to help inform and support your response. It may be a source that supports the writer’s argument, or it may present a counter argument. Whichever you choose, don’t just insert the source briefly and then move on—spend some time synthesizing the source, talking about it and why/how it relates to the original argument, and using it to make your own argument.
Important Note: Support your assertions with evidence from the text. Any time you make an assertion in your critical response, be sure it goes beyond just being your opinion.

Format
Your critical responses should be between 500-750 words. Failure to meet the minimum length will result in a reduced grade, and I will stop reading at 750 words. Title, heading, and citations do not count toward final word count.
The first paper will be written in MLA, and the second paper will be written in APA.
Each paper requires a works cited/references at the end of the paper.
