Assuming constant specific heats and using the Otto cycle as a model, determine the following quantities:

An old V-8 spark-ignition engine has a 4-in-diameter cylinder and a 4- in-long stroke. The intake conditions are atmospheric (70 F and 14.7 psia). The engine has a compression ratio of 9. (See Appendix 1A to review the geometrical relationships.) The peak cycle temperature is 4000 F. Assuming constant specific heats and using the Otto cycle as a model, determine the following quantities:

A. The net work (Btu) per cylinder per cycle

B. The pressure (psia) after compression

C. The peak pressure (psia) after combustion

D. The mean-effective pressure (psia) (i.e., net work divided by displacement volume)

E. The first-law thermal efficiency of the engine

F. The horsepower output of the engine running at 2000 rev/min, taking into account that in such a four-stroke engine, two revolutions of the crankshaft are required for each power stroke

G. The specific fuel consumption [i.e., the mass flow rate (lbm /hr) of fuel used per horsepower], assuming the heating value of the fuel in this case is 19 kBtu/lbm of fuel
