Identify City Problems: Research interview Assignment
The participant of my interview is a close friend of mine. We have known each other since he moved to Toronto. He is currently attending UTSC and lives in the Scarborough Town Center area. He lived in Toronto for 5 years, and has moved to different wards including Scarborough and North York. We had this interview when he came to my place for a visit. From his opinion, Toronto is a city that is suitable for people to live in, citizens have low pressure and has great government welfare. He lived in Shanghai, China for more than 10 years, compared to Toronto, they are both highly populated cities with more job opportunities. Shanghai has more convenient transit compared to toronto. For example, Shanghai has 20 subway lines and only 4 in Toronto, also mainly in the downtown area. He also feels safer back in Shanghai, which might be the result of restricted gun control. The main concern of his living issue is affordable housing. It is getting harder to find an affordable and satisfying place to live nowdays.
Before my friend came to Canada, he believed that having affordable housing in Shanghai was a serious problem. The average price per square meter to buy an apartment in Shanghai City Centre is about ¥124,093, which is C$ 24818 (Numbeo, 2022). Although with the extremely high property price, people still could rent a 1 bedroom apartment for $1500 per month on average. Back to Toronto, the average price per square foot to buy an apartment in Toronto is about $1400 (Demarco, 2022), but to rent a 1 bedroom apartment has to cost more than $2740 per month.
