Activities
Complete the following activities:
Carefully read the following:
This assessment task requires you to integrate sustainability into two IT planning and design projects. You can base your assessment on the case study projects or for IT projects for a business of you are working for. If you are completing this assessment for a business of your choice, it’s important that you can access workplace documents and information including plans (such as strategic business or operational plans), as well as resources including staff. Speak to your assessor to get APPROVAL if you want to base this on your own business or workplace.
You will be collecting evidence for this unit in a Project Portfolio. The steps you need to take are outlined below. Before you begin, complete page 4 of your Project Portfolio.
Make sure you are familiar with the project you are basing this assessment on and have read through the necessary background information. For the case study organisation, this is all of the documents included in the ICTSUS603 Simulation Pack. If it’s your own projects, it’s important that you have them approved by your assessor.
Complete page 4 of your Project Portfolio for this unit.
Read through the requirements of Section 1, 2 and 3 of your Project Portfolio which include detailed guidance relevant to all the assessment activities.
Sustainability preparation.
You are to prepare to integrate sustainability into two ICT planning and design projects. This involves:
· Reviewing workplace plans to identify sustainability requirements.
· Assessing the benefits of incorporating sustainability.
· Identifying ICT projects into which sustainability can be integrated and the extent to which they can be integrated.
· Researching sustainability options as relevant to the ICT projects and as per current market and technology trends.
· Researching and identifying technology solutions.
Once you have completed your research and analysis, you will also need to conduct a power consumption audit as this will also provide insights into the sustainability of resources. Whether you are completing this in your RTO or at work, conduct a power audit of at least five equipment items (e.g. computers, servers, routers, etc).
Document your research and power audit findings in Section 1 of your Project Portfolio and get ready to discuss your findings in a roundtable discussion in the next activity.
Complete Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
Round table discussion.
In a group round-table style discussion with a student group of approximately four or five, you are to present the research that you have completed, as well as your power audit findings. Your assessor will organise a date and time for this discussion.
Each person will have a turn (5 minutes per person) to discuss their research and analysis and power audit findings (as per the work you completed and documented for Portfolio Section 1). Make sure you respond to any questions asked, as well as ask other students about their work.
Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:
· demonstrate oral communication skills including:
o speaking clearly and concisely
o asking questions to identify required information
o responding to questions as required
o using active listening techniques to confirm understanding.
i
This can either be viewed in person by your assessor or you may like to video record the session for your assessor to watch later. Your assessor can provide you with more details at this step. Make sure you follow the instructions above and meet the timeframes allocated.
Develop sustainability strategies and complete integration of sustainability solutions.
You are to prepare to develop strategies for integrating sustainability into two ICT planning and design projects, as well as complete this integration. This involves:
· developing a plan for the implementation of the solutions you have identified.
· reporting on:
o potential energy usage and savings for the ICT projects
o estimating and comparing carbon dioxide emissions against benchmarks
o confirming that power consumption will be reduced
o providing recommendation.
· developing an ICT sustainability policy based on best practice and that can be used to guide all ICT projects including:
o environmentally sustainable management principles
o planning and design rules for ICT projects
o key performance indicators that also reflect industry best practice benchmarks.
Complete Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
Assume it is some months later and you need to assess the effectiveness of the sustainability policy, as well as assess whether the KPIs for sustainability in ICT projects are providing the information needed and whether they need to be reviewed. If you are completing this in your RTO, refer to the information in your Simulation Pack. You can also complete this activity based on your own ICT projects if you can access sufficient information to address the questions in the Portfolio. If not then complete the assessment based on the scenario information.
Prepare a brief report on the effectiveness of the sustainability policy by reviewing the information provided and answering the questions in your Project Portfolio. You are also to review the information provided about KPIs and their effectiveness and make suggestions for improvement.
Complete Section 3 of your Project Portfolio.
Submit your completed Project Portfolio.
Make sure you have completed all sections of your Project Portfolio, answered all questions, provided enough detail as indicated and proofread for spelling and grammar as necessary.
Submit to your assessor for marking.
