You are a healthcare manager in a hospital managing a pool of nurse assistants. You have been receiving complaints about three of your nurse assistants from patients, members of the team, and other staff. The feedback suggests to you that the three assistants on your team might need development in their emotional intelligence. You decide to interview a few patients and staff members to confirm this. Below are comments that were made to you about each of the three staff members:
Brittany
“She was so inflexible. She had her regiment and stuck to it.” —a patient
“Brittany shows a lot of commitment, but I wish she was better at collaborating.” —a nurse assistant on Brittany’s team
“She didn’t seem to care about my pain.” —a patient
Geraldo
“I love Geraldo. He‘s optimistic and responsible!” —a patient
“He certainly does his job well, you know, he’s conscientious and all, but I wish he was more self-confident.” —a patient
“Geraldo always seems to know exactly what to do when things get crazy on the ward. He never hesitates.” —a nurse
Trent
“He was very rude to my husband, who was only trying to advocate for me in a critical moment.” —a patient
“Trent has influence over the newer nurse assistants. He appears to be good at showing them the ropes.” —a past manager
“He didn’t even seem to pick up on my wife’s distress. It was like he wasn’t even noticing what was happening in the room.” —a patient’s husband
