Reiterating the directions/instructions and posting the discussion questions from the era’s along with the primary sources used in those discussions. No outside sources should be used to complete this Exam!
Choose ONE (1) image from each era for a total of four (4) image and discuss each image. 150-200 words minimum paragraph about each of your four (4) sources. Each paragraph should begin with an opening thesis statement about the era and/or the primary source and end with a concluding sentence. In each paragraph, briefly describe the source and then discuss its relevance to the era and the larger issues associated with it. Why is this primary source symbolic of its era? How is it significant historically and how does it connect to central issues of the time period? Address these questions in each of your four paragraphs. You should be able to enlarge the images to examine their details.

Please use Give Me Liberty! and the class materials posted in the weekly discussion questions to contextualize your four historical primary sources. If you cite information from these sources,
even without directly quoting from them, refer to the textbook page number, or the video title (for links I’ve posted) in parentheses at the end of the sentence. Please do not cite other sources.

Chapter 22 World War II discussion

1. Why were Norman Rockwell’s paintings “The Four Freedoms” so popular and how did they connect to American involvement in World War II? Use Give Me Liberty! and this video.
2. Using Give Me Liberty! and this 5 minute video, discuss the bracero program and the “zoot suit riots” and how they were connected to WWII.
3. Watch the first six minutes of this video and write a paragraph about who Rosie the Riveter was and what she represented during WWII.
4. Using Give Me Liberty! and the “Who Is an American?” (p. 898) section, discuss why Japanese Americans were put in internment camps during WWII and how citizens like Fred Korematsu sought to resist this.
Chapter 20-21 1920s, Great Depression, and New Deal discussion

4. Who was Frances Perkins and why is she considered a significant figure in the New Deal? Use this short podcast (with transcript) and Give Me Liberty! in your answer.
Chapter 19: World War I discussion

1) What were some of the reasons that the U.S got involved in World War One? Refer to the textbook and/or this video clip. (Links to an external site.)
2) How did suffragists like Alice Paul use World War One to help women get the right to vote? Watch and use this film clip in your answer.
3) What do the textbook authors mean when they refer to “coercive patriotism” (p. 757) during World War One and how were the Espionage and Sedition Acts related to this? You may wish to use Eugene V. Debs’ speech to the jury before sentencing under the Espionage Act (1918) in the Voices of Freedom section in Give Me Liberty!
4) What were some of the reasons that the Great Migration began in the 1910s? Discuss at least one of these primary sources in your answer.
