1. Briefly explain what it means to say that visual processing is selective, then give two examples of the kinds of information that are discarded at the first stage of visual processing.
2. Explain the general function of ‘simple’ and ‘complex’ cells in visual cortex, in terms of the properties of their receptive fields; then for each cell type explain what it does that is specifically different to the other cell type.
3. Define the Neuron Doctrine (Grandmother cell hypothesis), then explain the concept of broad tuning in V1 cells (e.g. to orientation), and why this poses a problem for the Neuron Doctrine
